Bathroom remodeling can take weeks to finish. However, there are several factors that affect its timeline. Knowing these factors can be helpful when you have a small window of time to complete your project. Here are the factors that will affect your bathroom remodeling timeline.
Makeover or Full Remodel
A bathroom makeover uses the same structure as the original, focusing on cosmetic changes, such as replacing fixtures, tiles, toilets and vanities. This means the plumbing and floor plan will be more or less the same as the original, and, therefore, it eliminates the need for demolition. Consequently, bathroom makeovers require less materials and labor, and are typically completed in three to five days.
A full bathroom remodel, on the other hand, takes much longer to complete. It requires taking the bathroom apart and rebuilding it. Your bathroom remodeling contractor may be working from a new floor plan. The new plumbing, electrical lines and preliminary carpentry will take up the first week alone. The second week will include installation of wall insulation and drywall, including finishing and painting. The third week is when it all comes together, when cabinetry, flooring and tiles are installed, along with fixtures and everything else.
Choice of Material
The materials you choose for your bathroom renovation may affect your remodeling timeline. Flooring materials like porcelain, ceramic and marble tiles have different installation requirements, such as the type of adhesive, grout and curing time. Heavier materials take longer to cut, which can add up the larger the floor area is.
Unplanned Repairs
Structural problems may not be evident until the old structure is removed, prompting unplanned repairs before remodeling can continue. While this does not happen often, it can delay your project depending on the scope of the problem. Unplanned repairs will also incur additional cost as it is not part of the estimated cost. If your bathroom had not been remodeled for some time, play it safe and prepare an emergency budget. About 10% to 20% of the estimate should be enough to cover structural repairs.
