Everyone deserves a spa day every now and then. However, if you just don’t have the time to go to the spa, you might want to consider installing a steam shower. In terms of function, a steam shower is similar to a sauna, but it has several distinct advantages.

The Pros and Cons of a Steam Shower
  • Quick start time –  Unlike saunas, steam showers work immediately upon activation. This means you don’t have to wait before enjoying a luxurious spa experience. Upon pressing the button, steam immediately starts to fill the sealed shower stall.
  • Health benefits – Steam can help clear up congested sinuses and improve blood circulation. If you’re a fitness enthusiast, a steam shower is an effective way of winding down after vigorous exercise. The metabolic waste that accumulated in your muscles during strenuous exercise is removed by improved blood circulation.
  • Increased property value – A steam shower is a high-end feature that can boost your property’s value. It can also be used as a key selling point that might help you clinch a property sale.

What Are the Disadvantages of a Steam Shower?

Of course, a steam shower is not without its disadvantages. Here’s an overview of its cons:

  • Takes up a large amount of vertical space – Contrary to what many think, steam showers can be installed in small bathrooms. What matters is the ceiling height. In general, a bathroom should have a height of around seven feet to fit a sealed shower stall.
  • Higher electricity bills – Steam showers consume less water than conventional showers, so they shouldn’t have a significant impact on your water bill. What you need to keep an eye on is your electricity bill because steam showers rely on generators that need to be connected to a power source that provides 220 or 240 volts.

If you’re not sure if a steam shower is a good addition to your home, it’s best to consult one of your local home builders

Don’t underestimate the impact of seemingly minor details on your new kitchen’s look. Remember: when it comes to exterior design, consistency is key.

What are the details you shouldn’t overlook when planning a kitchen remodel? Krier’s Construction, your trusted kitchen remodeling and landscaping company, gives an overview and shares some design tips below:

Kitchen Design
  1. Electrical Outlets

White is the standard color for electrical outlets. However, against a background with a color other than white, white electrical outlets draw too much attention away from your kitchen backsplash. An easy fix to this problem would be to coordinate the colors of your outlets and wall plates with the color of your backsplash tiles.

  1. Grout Color

When choosing kitchen tiles, you shouldn’t treat the color of your grout as an afterthought. The right grout color can help create texture or contrast that highlights the tiles’ design.

Important note: you need to take into account the practical considerations of your kitchen’s grout color. For instance, white grout pairs well with traditional designs. However, since they stain easily, this color needs to be cleaned frequently.

Keep in mind coordinating colors can be tricky. That’s why if you’re having trouble finalizing your kitchen’s color scheme, don’t hesitate to consult your local general contractor

  1. Hardware Style

Cabinet pulls, brackets and handles should complement your kitchen’s design. Here’s a tip: to quickly narrow down your options, find out which hardware styles and materials have been traditionally used in your kitchen’s design style. For instance, wooden knobs are usually paired with traditional white cabinets in rustic kitchens while sleek, black cabinet pulls and brackets are installed on light-colored cabinets in minimalist kitchens. For more design tips for your home improvement project, consult one of your local kitchen remodelers or roofers

What are the features every bathroom should have? A bathroom basin, faucet, towel rails and a shower or tub are some of the features you should prioritize when planning a bathroom remodeling project. Here are some tips on designing these items.

Planning a Bathroom Remodel
  1. Bathroom Basin

The bathroom is one of the smallest parts of your home despite also being one of the most frequently used. To free up floor space, you can install a wall-mounted bathroom basin. However, if you have plenty of bathroom floor space, we recommend installing double basins to maximize bathroom functionality.

  1. Bathroom Faucets

Bathroom faucets give you an opportunity to add a personal touch to your bathroom. You can never go wrong with sticking to polished chrome (the standard finish for bathroom tapware), but you have a wide range of options available to you. Brushed chrome, brushed bronze, polished brass, polished nickel and stainless steel are some of the more popular finishes.

  1. Towel Rails or Hooks

We recommend choosing the same finish for all your bathroom features, including towel rails and bathroom tapware, to create a uniform, streamlined look. Remember: when it comes to bathroom design, consistency is key.

  1. Shower or Tub

A shower is a no-brainer for bathrooms with limited space. However, if you have enough floor space, why not install a tub? There’s nothing like taking a nice, relaxing soak in your tub after a long day.

Here’s a tip: to create a relaxing, spa-like atmosphere in your bathroom, you can install dimmers and feature lighting. And, if you want to make your bathroom seem larger, we recommend choosing a frameless shower, which gives the illusion of a more spacious bathroom. For more design tips, consult one of your local bathroom remodelers and home builders

The backsplash is arguably the easiest feature in your kitchen to customize. However, before choosing a new tile or design for your backsplash, there are a few things you should consider.

Kitchen Backsplash
  1. Backsplash Size

You can find out how much material you’ll need by multiplying the width by the height of your kitchen wall. And, to ensure there will be enough material for your new backsplash, it’s usually standard practice to add an extra 10%.

Here’s a tip: extending the backsplash tiling to wrap around the kitchen gives the illusion of a larger space.

  1. Countertop Material

If you’re considering installing a new kitchen countertop and backsplash, it makes more practical sense to choose the countertop material first. That’s because it’s easier to match the countertop to the backsplash than vice versa.

  1. Countertop and Cabinet Colors

The same goes for choosing a color scheme for your kitchen countertop and cabinets: you need to choose the countertop and cabinet colors before finalizing the backsplash design.

Important note: make sure to ask for samples colors and tiles before making a decision on the final design. Looking at pictures of tiles and countertop materials in product catalogs is a good start, but you shouldn’t rely on pictures alone. Hold the samples up in your kitchen at different times of the day to see whether they’re a good fit for your kitchen’s design.

  1. Focal Points

Elaborate backsplash tile designs should be located above the range and the sink. That’s because these are the focal points (features and areas the eye is naturally drawn to) in your kitchen. For more design tips, consult one of your local roofers and exterior contractors.

According to home builders, the basement space is one of the most underutilized spaces in most American homes. Oftentimes, basements are used only as a laundry room or a storage area. Occasionally, it can also double as an entertainment hub for your family or even as a guest area. But if you want to improve your home’s functionality, you should consider converting this space into a bathroom. However, you’ll need to factor in some important things.

Important Things to Consider for Basement Bathroom Projects

New Plumbing

This is the most challenging part of a basement bathroom installation project. Unless you already have an existing bathroom in your basement, you’ll need to create a new plumbing plan for your basement. While this aspect can be costly, you can reduce the costs by placing your new bathroom near the existing plumbing and wiring to ease the hookup process.

Zoning and Permits

Your general contractor will tell you that it’s important to check with your local building department before starting this project. In turn, you’ll have a clearer picture regarding zoning ordinances, deed restrictions and other important stipulations. Fortunately, you don’t have to do this on your own as your bathroom remodeling contractor, Krier’s Construction, is familiar with the local building codes. This means that you don’t have to worry, thinking whether or not your project is up to code.

Bathroom Type

What kind of bathroom will you install? Will it be a simple half-bath with a toilet and sink? Or will you go for a full-blown bathroom that comes with a tub and a shower? Your decision should come from your needs and preferences as well as your budget. It’s also worth noting that every bathroom remodeling project should include strong ventilation provisions to prevent moisture-related problems from occurring.

Aside from bathroom remodeling, we also offer landscaping. We are dedicated to providing you exceptional service in every job we do. Call us today at (920) 233-3633, or fill out our contact form to request a free quote. We serve Green Bay, Oshkosh and Appleton, WI.
