Your kitchen, no matter the size, is an important part of your home. However, situations can change as well as your needs at home. What was once a perfectly sized kitchen may become too small to your liking down the road. Before you call a general contractor to help you expand the space, there are things you should consider. We explain four of them here.
1. Remove the clutter. There are times when you think your kitchen is too small, but in reality, it just looks and feels small. Before any renovations take place, consider decluttering your kitchen. Start with your small appliances. If it’s something that you’re not using everyday or every week, you may want to consider moving them out of your line of sight. Try to find a storage space for items you seldom use – more on that below. Or, you may either sell or donate other items that are no longer of use for you.
2. Add storage space. Get the most out of your kitchen by adding storage spaces. These can also give you more options on where to put your appliances and other kitchen items. Don’t hesitate to let your storage space run up the wall. Floor-to-ceiling cabinets are helpful for adding storage as well as keeping harmful things away from children. If there are things that you rarely use, but can’t get rid of, you may put them at the top shelves.
3. Remove the seating. Barstool seating may look great in your kitchen, but it can take up too much space. Remove the kitchen seating to free up more floor space. Put all seating in your breakfast room or dining area.
4. Use the space under the cabinets. If you already have overhead cabinets, you may want to take advantage of the space underneath them. Hang a rack for your wine glasses or attach hooks for your mugs or other kitchen utensils. This way, you’re adding storage space while not using any floor space.
